Law360 (May 3, 2021, 8:58 PM EDT) — Nearly 50 House Democrats requested $75 million in the federal budget on Monday to offer legal counsel to asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors and other immigrants who often appear unrepresented in immigration court, saying the funds will ensure fairness while helping the courts operate more efficiently.

In a letter to the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Rep. Norma Torres of California led 47 fellow Democratic lawmakers in asking that the funds be used to help individuals embroiled in federal immigration court removal proceedings, particularly unaccompanied minors and immigrants with mental health issues.
