Community Advocates Say NJ Immigration Directive Is Lawful

Law360 (May 21, 2020, 2:41 PM EDT) — A group of 24 community advocacy organizations are siding with the New Jersey state attorney general in Ocean County’s lawsuit challenging his order for local law enforcement not to share information with federal immigration authorities, arguing that the directive is lawful.

The advocacy groups told a New Jersey federal court in a Wednesday brief spearheaded by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey that state attorney general Gurbir S. Grewal had the authority to issue his 2018 directive, known as the Immigrant Trust Directive, aimed at building trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.
