Calif. Sheriff Sued Over 'Shadow' System For ICE Transfers

By Mike LaSusa (November 17, 2021, 6:00 PM EST) — The sheriff of Sacramento County has a “shadow” system for transferring inmates to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, violating California’s restrictions on local police cooperation with federal immigration authorities, according to a lawsuit announced Tuesday.

A pair of nonprofit groups, United Latinos and NorCal Resist, sued Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones on Monday in state court. The groups were joined in the lawsuit by Misael Echeveste, who claims he was illegally transferred from the sheriff’s custody to ICE in 2018.
